Description

Description
Aluminium identity disc attached to a small (bracelet sized) steel chain. The disc is oval-shaped and impressed on the obverse with ‘DVR. W. W. YOUNG PRES 12832 A.A.S.C. 3. D.S.C. A.I.F.’

Summary
Walter Wilson Young was a 37 year old motor driver from Adelaide, South Australia when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 28 July 1915. He was originally from Edinburgh, Scotland and had previously served 2 years in the 9 Royal Scots Highlanders. 12832 Driver Young embarked for overseas on board HMAT A29 Suevic on 31 May 1916 with B Section of the 11 Field Ambulance. He arrived at Devonport, England on 21 June 1916.

On 25 November 1916 he proceeded from Southampton, England to France. Driver Young transferred to 3 Division Supply Column on 23 December 1916. However, he remained attached for duty with the 11 Field Ambulance. On 12 March 1918 Driver Young was taken on strength of the 3 Australian Motor Transport Company from 3 Division Supply Column.

Driver Young joined the 5 Australian Motor Transport Company on 1 May 1919. On 5 September 1919 he married Ms. Isabella Lunn at the Parish Church at Corstorphine (near Edinburgh). On 11 October 1919 proceeded from the U.K. Demob Depot on indefinite leave. Driver Young returned to Australia on 27 March 1920 with his wife, arriving in Adelaide on 10 May 1920. He was discharged on 10 July 1920.
